Things to Do in Las Vegas That Aren't On the Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is a globally recognized street. It draws millions of visitors each year. But for residents and savvy travelers, notable things about Las Vegas often happen off the Strip. Here is a guide to notable experiences in Southern Nevada that have nothing to do with the resort corridor.\n\nRed Rock Canyon National Conservation Area\n\nRed Rock Canyon sits just west of Las Vegas, a 20-minute drive from the Strip. The 13-mile scenic drive gives you views of stunning red sandstone formations against the blue Nevada sky. Hiking trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs. Rock climbers come from around the world to test themselves on the sandstone cliffs. Mountain bikers have access to miles of dedicated trails. The visitor center provides geology and wildlife exhibits that explain how this landscape was formed.\n\nMount Charleston\n\nMount Charleston is part of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and sits about 45 minutes northwest of Las Vegas. The elevation tops 11,900 feet, which means temperatures can be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the valley floor. In summer, residents escape the heat by hiking through pine forests and having picnics at alpine meadows. In winter, the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort offers skiing and snowboarding. The lodge at Mount Charleston is a historic building that has been welcoming visitors for decades.\n\nDowntown Las Vegas and the Arts District\n\nDowntown Las Vegas is the original heart of the city. Fremont Street Experience offers a pedestrian mall with live music, street performers, and the famous Viva Vision light show. But the real draw for locals is the surrounding neighborhoods. The Arts District, centered on Main and Charleston, has galleries, vintage shops, breweries, and independent restaurants. First Friday brings the community together for art walks, food trucks, and live music. Container Park is a unique shopping and dining venue built from shipping containers.\n\nLake Mead and the Colorado River\n\nLake Mead National Recreation Area is a 30-minute drive from the Strip. The lake offers boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming. The Colorado River below Hoover Dam offers calmer waters for float trips and kayaking. The Historic Railroad Trail follows the original railway used to build Hoover Dam and offers a relatively flat, shaded hike with tunnel views of the lake.\n\nHoover Dam\n\nHoover Dam is one of the great engineering achievements of the 20th century. It is a 45-minute drive from Las Vegas. Visitors can take tours of the power plant and dam interior, walk across the top of the dam, or cross the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for panoramic views.\n\nValley of Fire State Park\n\nValley of Fire is Nevada's oldest state park, located about an hour northeast of Las Vegas. It features stunning red Aztec sandstone formations, ancient petroglyphs, and dramatic desert scenery. The park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and camping. It is one of the most photographed natural areas in Nevada.\n\nProfessional Sports\n\nLas Vegas has become a professional sports destination. Catch a Vegas Golden Knights hockey game at T-Mobile Arena, watch the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, or cheer on the Aces women's basketball team. These venues and events are all located off the Strip and draw passionate local crowds.\n\nThe Las Vegas experience extends well beyond the Strip. For residents and visitors who want to explore, Southern Nevada offers outdoor adventure, cultural attractions, and authentic local experiences that make this a truly unique place to live.
