How to Get a Nevada Driver License After Moving to Las Vegas

New Nevada residents must transfer their out-of-state driver license within 30 days of establishing residency. Here is your complete guide to the Nevada DMV process.

Important: 30-Day Transfer Requirement

Nevada law requires new residents to obtain a Nevada driver license and register their vehicles within 30 days of establishing residency. Failure to do so may result in fines or penalties. Information as of August 2026. Confirm details at dmv.nv.gov.

Who Is Considered a New Resident?

You are considered a Nevada resident if you engage in any of the following: employment in Nevada, enrolling children in Nevada schools, registering to vote in Nevada, or occupying a dwelling in Nevada for 30 consecutive days. Once you meet any of these criteria, the 30-day clock starts.

REAL ID vs. Standard Nevada License

REAL ID

Requires additional proof of identity and residency. Needed for domestic air travel (after federal enforcement begins) and accessing federal facilities. Marked with a gold star.

Standard License

Basic driver license without the REAL ID star. Cannot be used for boarding domestic flights or entering federal buildings after the REAL ID enforcement deadline. Less documentation required.

Most new residents should opt for the REAL ID to avoid needing a second trip later.

Required Documents

Proof of Identity (REAL ID requires one)

  • Valid U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certified birth certificate (U.S.)
  • Permanent resident card (green card)
  • Employment authorization document

Proof of Social Security Number

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 or pay stub showing full SSN
  • SSA-1099 form

Proof of Nevada Residency (two documents required)

  • Nevada utility bill (within 60 days)
  • Lease or mortgage agreement
  • Nevada bank statement
  • Nevada vehicle registration or title
  • Nevada voter registration card

The DMV Process Step by Step

1

Make an Appointment

Visit dmv.nv.gov to schedule an appointment at a Las Vegas-area DMV office. Walk-in service is limited; appointments are strongly recommended. Same-day appointments may be available at some locations.

2

Prepare Your Documents

Gather your proof of identity, Social Security documentation, and two proofs of Nevada residency. Make copies of everything. For REAL ID, ensure your birth certificate or passport is current.

3

Pass the Written Test

All new residents must pass a vision test and a written knowledge test based on the Nevada Driver Handbook. Study the handbook available online at dmv.nv.gov before your appointment.

4

Pass the Driving Test (if required)

If your out-of-state license is expired, you may need to take a driving skills test. A valid out-of-state license typically waives this requirement.

5

Pay Fees and Receive License

Pay the applicable fees (approximately $28 for a standard 4-year license or $42 for an 8-year license). You will receive a temporary paper license and your permanent card by mail within 7-10 business days.

Vehicle Registration & Insurance

New residents must register their vehicles in Nevada within 30 days of moving. You will need your current out-of-state title and registration, proof of Nevada insurance, and a passing VIN inspection (performed at the DMV).

What You Need for Vehicle Registration

  • Out-of-state vehicle title (or loan documentation)
  • Current out-of-state registration
  • Nevada insurance policy or binder
  • VIN inspection completed at DMV
  • Emissions test (if required for your vehicle and county)
  • Payment for registration fees and government services tax

Emissions Testing in Clark County

All gasoline-powered vehicles 1968 and newer registered in Clark County must pass an emissions test (smog check) every two years. New residents must obtain an emissions test within 30 days of registering their vehicle. Diesel vehicles 1997 and newer also require emissions testing in Clark County.

VIN Inspection

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) inspection is required for all vehicles being registered in Nevada for the first time. This is done at the DMV and verifies that the VIN matches the vehicle's paperwork. Some DMV offices offer this as a walk-in service.

Nevada Insurance Requirements

Nevada requires all drivers to carry liability insurance with minimum coverage of 25/50/20 ($25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, $20,000 per accident for property damage). Proof of insurance is required for both driver license and vehicle registration.
