A surprising number of people decide they cannot buy a house based on a credit score they saw inside a consumer app.
They never speak with a mortgage lender.
They never review a loan program.
They never ask whether the issue can be fixed.
They simply decide:
“Not me.”
Lisa wants you to stop doing that.
“BAD CREDIT” CAN MEAN MANY DIFFERENT THINGS
One buyer says:
“My credit is terrible.”
Score is reasonably workable, but they had one late payment.
Another buyer has:
- Collections
- Multiple recent lates
- High revolving balances
- Thin credit history
Completely different situation.
A number alone does not explain the entire credit profile.
MORTGAGE CREDIT MAY NOT MATCH YOUR APP
Consumer scoring products can use different models than mortgage underwriting.
That does not mean your app is useless.
It means it should not be your loan officer.
See how credit affects a mortgage for the difference.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Talk to a lender.
Worst-case scenario:
They say you're not ready yet.
That is still useful because now you can ask:
- Why?
- What needs to change?
- How long might it take?
- Which items matter most?
DON'T RANDOMLY START “FIXING” CREDIT
This can backfire.
Someone on social media says:
“Close all your cards!”
Another says:
“Dispute everything!”
Another says:
“Open five secured cards!”
Do not turn your credit file into a science experiment while preparing for a mortgage.
Ask a qualified professional what actions may help your specific situation.
PAYING DOWN REVOLVING DEBT
Sometimes reducing credit-card balances can improve both monthly debt obligations and credit utilization.
But again, the best use of your available cash depends on the whole mortgage strategy.
COLLECTIONS
Do not assume every collection must be paid before qualification, and do not assume none matter.
Loan-program and lender rules differ.
YOU MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
This is why Lisa encourages people to start early.
Maybe you're ready today.
Maybe three months.
Maybe a year.
The only way to build a realistic path is to know where you are.
