What Do Home Title Lock Services Actually Do?

Published 2026-09-13 Last reviewed 2026-09-13 By Lisa C Hamilton, REALTOR®

Quick Answer

Commercial title lock services generally provide monitoring, alerts or related assistance. The word lock can sound like the service literally prevents any new deed from being recorded. Consumers should not assume that unless the service specifically and lawfully provides such functionality.

Read the Service Description

Ask what databases are monitored, how quickly, what documents trigger alerts, whether someone investigates, whether legal help is included, whether insurance is included, and whether there is a recovery-service limit.

What It Does Not Replace

Unless explicitly included under separate valid coverage or services, a title lock does not replace owner's title insurance, an attorney, the county recorder, identity-theft protection, or property inspection.

Good Consumer Rule

Buy based on what the service actually does. Not the fear created by its name.

Important

FREE CLARK COUNTY PROPERTY RECORDING ALERT. Clark County offers a Recording Notification Service that allows users to enroll names and/or parcel numbers and receive email notifications when matching documents are recorded. Clark County expressly states that the service is a notification tool and does not prevent a document from being recorded, and the county cautions that it cannot guarantee it will identify every document that may affect a property. That makes it useful as an early-warning resource, not a substitute for title insurance or legal help. Enroll on the official Clark County Recording Notification Service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a title lock stop anyone from recording a deed?

Do not assume that unless the service specifically and lawfully provides such functionality.

Is a title lock the same as title insurance?

No. They are different products.
